I’m a designer-maker working from my studio at the bottom of my garden in beautiful Wales. Contemporary enamelling demonstrates an innovative approach to an ancient and traditional craft. My work investigates surface pattern design, mark making, texture and colour, explored through enamel, printmaking and photography.
My love of this material derives from its alchemy. Enamelling is the art of firing glass onto metal. I work mostly with copper as it has such beautiful and transforming characteristics. As the copper cools the true colours emerge. Reactions that occur while firing add to the serendipity and joy of this creative process.
During firing the enamel displays dramatic and astonishing changes in form, from a powder like substance, to transform into a medium, comparable to glass in character with the potential to be applied to both two-dimensional and three dimensional sculptural forms. For me there is a narrative quality to my work. The application of enamel adds a sense of fragile permanence.
